Michael O’Neill
Managing Partner

Michael began practising in 1981 and was a founding partner of NOT Lawyers. He has specialised in corporate commercial litigation, with an emphasis on insolvency and company litigation. Michael has handled matters in all jurisdictions including the High Court, the Federal Court and the Supreme Court in relation to most commercial matters including trade practices law, company applications, contract disputes, and recovery matters for lenders.

For example, Michael has acted in disputes involving claims in excess of $400 million which have required him to spend the majority of his working week over a two-year period on the one piece of litigation. Michael also acts for the Special Purpose Liquidator of One.Tel Limited (in Liquidation) in relation to the investigation of potential claims in excess of $100 million.

As a corporate insolvency lawyer, Michael has advised banks, boards of directors, insolvency practitioners, individual directors and employees and creditor suppliers in relation to all aspects of insolvency law ranging from preference recoveries to complex misfeasance proceedings.

Simon Gallant
Partner

Simon began practising in 1985 and joined NOT Lawyers as a partner in October 2000.

Simon has wide experience of corporate and insolvency law in both the UK and New South Wales. Simon primarily practises in corporate insolvency and reconstruction and acts for a number of liquidators and administrators. In addition, he provides advice to directors in a range of matters that arise in day to day business.

David Evans
Partner

David commenced practising in 1994, joined NOT Lawyers in 2001, and was appointed as a partner in January 2004.

David’s early practice revolved around a combination of transaction and litigation work, primarily in the context of insolvency, real property and securities. In his time at NOT Lawyers, he has successfully developed a commercial and domestic conveyancing, leasing and mortgage practice and he is much sought after in this area. David continues to oversee many multi-million dollar transactions, as well as complicated commercial and property litigation matters. He has established a loyal client base over his thirteen years in practice.

David Blessington
Consultant

David was admitted to practice as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1971. In 1976 Blessington Judd solicitors was established and David was a founding partner. He became a partner in Baker & McKenzie and established its insolvency division. David was involved in, amongst other significant insolvencies, the receiverships of Channel 10 and John Fairfax and acted for the Court appointed trustees of the Estate Mortgage Trusts. 

In 1994 David commenced practise on his own account and in 2000 became a consultant to Coudert Bros.

David has specialised in Insolvency Law for the whole of his legal career. He has had a great deal of experience in commercial litigation and many other areas of law in which insolvency practitioners need advice or find themselves involved.

Ted Popper
Solicitor

Ted has been practising since 1985. He has been a senior litigation solicitor with NOT Lawyers since 2000. Prior to joining NOT Lawyers, he was a senior litigation lawyer with Solomon Garland Partners, a barrister at Blackstone Chambers and Nigel Bowen Chambers and a commissioned Legal Officer with the Royal Australian Navy.

Ted’s practice areas are Commercial Litigation, Insolvency Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Ted has conducted complex commercial litigation in the Federal Court of Australia, Supreme Court of NSW and District Court of NSW. He has acted for liquidators, receivers and administrators and also for directors, creditors and debtors.

He also has extensive experience as an advocate at the Sydney Bar, as a solicitor and as a legal officer in the Navy and later member of the NSW Legal Panel of the RAN Reserve appearing in courts-martial as both prosecutor and defence counsel.

Alan Friedlander
Solicitor

Alan has been practising as a solicitor since 1976. He has worked both in Australia and overseas and he has extensive experience in commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution, acting for both international and local businesses. He has been admitted to practise in Australia, England, Wales and Hong Kong.

Alan has, for most of his career, worked with top tier law firms. He has particular experience in insolvency litigation, property litigation and product liability claims and he has also conducted numerous commercial litigation matters involving telecommunications, insurance, intellectual property, taxation and debt recovery, as well as giving day to day corporate advice.

Alan conducts litigation matters for clients in all jurisdictions and has, either as an advocate or as instructing solicitor, been involved in many leading law cases.

Bill Cameron
Solicitor

Bill has been practising since 1981 having spent 20 years in practise in the UK before joining NOT Lawyers in 2001.

Bill’s practice areas include commercial litigation, insolvency litigation, employment litigation as well as commercial transaction work including the sale and purchase of businesses.

Since joining NOT Lawyers Bill has been involved in complex commercial litigation in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the District Court of New South Wales on behalf of company liquidators, directors and individual litigants. At the same time Bill has handled a number of complex commercial transactions including corporate mergers and the sale and purchase of businesses.

Colin Brown
Solicitor

Following returning to Australia from a working sojourn in London, Colin joined the firm in April 2005 and since then has brought to bear his commercial outlook to dispute resolution and a focus on providing the best result for his clients, whether via litigation or alternative dispute resolution avenues in a wide range of matters.

He acts for private and corporate clients involved in commercial litigation, having conducted a wide range of matters arising out of contractual disputes.

Having completed the Insolvency Education Program promoted by the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Australia, Colin has added to his experience in debt recovery actions and insolvency related matters and continues to regularly advise and act for insolvency practitioners on a wide range of issues, including issues arising from voluntary administrations, liquidations and receiverships, as well as acting for directors or creditors in the insolvency context.

Colin also has a weakness for team sports, particularly cricket and all forms of football.

Jacki Cole
Solicitor

Jacki is a commercial litigation/insolvency practitioner who graduated in law and commerce (accountancy) in 1994 from the University of Otago in New Zealand. After a number of years in practice in NZ, Jacki became a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in January 2002 and is also on the Register of Practitioners of the High Court of Australia.

Jacki has conducted complex commercial litigation in the Supreme and District Courts of NSW (including matters which have gone on appeal to the Court of Appeal) and is also familiar with the practice and procedure of the Local Court of NSW and various judicial/quasi judicial tribunals. She has conducted numerous bankruptcy matters in the Federal Magistrates Court of Australia, acting on behalf of petitioning creditors as well as on behalf of debtors.

Jacki has acted, and continues to act, for liquidators and administrators and also for company directors and individual litigants in a variety of jurisdictions and in relation to diverse areas of law including insolvent trading, breach of contract, oppression of minority shareholders and preference recovery actions.

Jacki is a member of the Law Society of New South Wales.

Michael Stevens
Solicitor

Michael was admitted in 1997, and practises in the area of commercial litigation and insolvency.

Michael commenced employment with this firm in March 2008, and practises with an emphasis on the practical and commercial resolution to ongoing disputes, and advice to clients.

Michael has experience in commercial, property and banking and finance recovery claims, and insolvency matters, including issues dealing with administrations, receiverships and liquidations.

Michael completed his Masters of Laws at Sydney University in 2007, where he specialised in the areas of insolvency and commercial litigation.

Lynda Lim
Solicitor

Lynda completed a combined Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts degree at the Australian National University and was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2001. Lynda commenced with NOT Lawyers in 2005.

Lynda’s main areas of practice include commercial litigation, dispute resolution and corporate insolvency with a particular emphasis on mortgage recovery, re-possession of land claims, equipment finance, property & contractual disputes, commercial debt recovery and actions under the Trade Practices Act and Corporations Act.

Lynda has acted on behalf of Plaintiffs and Defendants in a wide range of litigation matters at various jurisdictions. Lynda is therefore familiar with and has a comprehensive knowledge of the practice and procedure of the Supreme, District and Local Courts, Land & Environment Court, New South Wales Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia.

Lynda has also previously conducted litigation for and provided advice and assistance to a range of clients, including a major Australian banking corporation, an international food and agricultural banking institution, a major television network organisation, an elite Australian fashion designer, trade supply and equipment finance companies, small to medium sized businesses and private clients.

Lynda is on maternity leave at the present time.

Michael Yates
Consultant

Michael joined NOT Lawyers as a consultant in 2007. Michael’s previous legal experience includes partner in charge of the corporate practice at Holding Redlich, senior manager and in-house counsel at Coopers & Lybrand and undertaking major projects at Corrs Chambers Westgarth and Dunhill Madden Butler. He has extensive high level commercial and corporate law experience with an emphasis on company/trust floats and rights issues, establishment of venture capital funds, mergers and acquisitions, public company takeovers and joint ventures.

Roger Saxton
Special Counsel

Roger is an international commercial transactions and corporate lawyer who has practiced in the United States, Japan, Sweden and, since 1989, Australia. Best known for his work advising mining, natural resources and energy companies, he is also well versed in advising consumer products, electronics, software, food distribution and retail, and food service retail companies.

Roger has an in-depth knowledge of the corporate legal environment having served as in-house counsel for major international companies in the consumer products, mining, food distribution and food service retail industries. He has advised regarding the legal aspects of the exploration, development and operation of some of the largest mining projects in Australia and in neighbouring countries, and currently advises Australian and international companies and governmental entities regarding projects in Australia, North and South America, and Asia.

Roger is the current Chairman of the Cross-Border Investment Committee of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA), a director of the Australia-Japan Society of NSW, and Legal Counsel to the Canadian-Australian Chamber of Commerce Limited.

Mike Chenoweth
Paralegal

Mike joined NOT Lawyers in 2007 and has worked as a paralegal for the past 5 years while completing his law degree at night. He has experience in a wide range of areas including general conveyancing, commercial and property transactions and has worked primarily in the litigation practice, with particular focus on insurance debt recovery. He also has background knowledge of bankruptcy and insolvency and been actively involved in advising large corporations in relation to complex corporate governance issues.”

Mike has appeared in the Local, District and Supreme Courts of NSW along with the Federal Court of Australia and is familiar with the practices of these Courts. He has worked closely with a vast array of clients including a number of large multi-national insurance companies.

Amy Williams
Licensed Conveyancer

Amy has been practising in the property law area since 2001 and qualified as a licensed conveyancer at the beginning of 2005. As such, she is qualified to give legal advice in the context of all transactional property law matters.

Amy has extensive experience in commercial, residential and rural property transactions and has handled various matters acting on behalf of vendors, purchasers, lessors, lessees, mortgagees, mortgagors, caveators etc. She also continues to assist David Evans in a range of commercial transactions as well as in property dispute matters and mortgagee litigation work.

Lauren Ingall
Licensed Conveyancer

Lauren has practiced as a property paralegal since 1998, working for both medium and large Sydney law firms. She studied at Macquarie University and recently completed the Conveyancing Law and Practice degree to become a Licensed Conveyancer.

Lauren has extensive experience in both residential and commercial property transactions acting for both vendor and purchasers. She has also acted for many well known developer clients with their acquisitions of large parcels of land and existing buildings through to subdivision stages for strata, commercial, residential and community titles.

Lisa Muir
Office Manager

Lisa has been with NOT Lawyers since 2001. She has over 19 years experience in the legal industry, and has been working in human resources since 1994. She has a Masters degree in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management from Sydney University.

Apart from a broad range of administrative duties, Lisa is in charge of the recruitment and induction of new staff and the procurement and supply of services.
